2010 BC Summer Games

The 2010 BC Summer Games are coming to Langley!

The Under 14 program develops athletes for the BC Summer Games, which are held every second year. To ensure continuity of player development, Basketball BC holds an Under 14 Provincial Jamboree which includes the selection of two U14 Provincial Teams per gender in non Summer Games years. Sixteen teams from eight geographic zones in British Columbia participate in the Summer Games. A single girls’ and boys’ team represent each zone. In Jamboree only years approximately sixteen teams of each gender attend a provincial jamboree held on the May long weekend. Try-outs for the regional teams take place in April. Once the teams are selected, they train and play exhibition games under the direction of their Regional Coach. Each team consists of ten players and two alternates.

The Under 14 program for 2010 consists of Regional Development Camps, the selection of Regional teams, a U14 Jamboree, the selection of BC Summer Games Zone Teams and participation in the BC Summer Games. Camps which are designed to assist in the development of fundamentals and the assessment of players skills will be held in mid April at designated sites throughout BC.  Regional Teams will be selected from these camps and in areas with larger population bases. In areas with a smaller population base, only a single BC Games Zone team will be selected.

Regional Teams consist of ten players and may retain two alternates that practice but do not take part in the BC Games Zone Team selection process unless a team member must be replaced. Each participant on an Under 14 Regional Team receives five weeks of on-going training with the Regional coach in their area, a Basketball BC reversible jersey and participation in the U14 Jamboree being held at Douglas College from May 28 to 30th. The cost to participate on a Regional Team is $150.00. Please note that coaches may suggest additional training and competition opportunities that require supplemental funding.

BC Games Zone teams are either selected directly from Regional Development Camps or in Zones with multiple Regional Teams from the Jamboree and a follow up selection camp that takes place no later than one week after the Jamboree. BC Summer Games Teams consist of ten players and may retain two alternates that practice but, do not take part in the BC Games. Players selected to participate on a BC Summer Games Zone Team receive high level coaching, a BC Games uniform, travel, food and accommodation when participating in the BC Summer Games in Langley from July 22nd to 25th. The cost to participate on a BC Games Zone team is $325.00 and includes travel to and from the BC Games, accommodation and meals while attending the BC Summer Games and a BC Games Zone team uniform.

Athletes participating in the BC Summer Games will also receive External Sports credits for Athlete 10. Students who have successfully completed a Ministry approved External Credential are entitled to receive credit toward their secondary school graduation.
